Duck Season Outlook: Mixed bag in North America

The news for duck hunters isn't all sunshine and shotguns this year. According to a recent Delta Waterfowl report, breeding habitat conditions for ducks are inconsistent across North America. While some areas are experiencing drought, others are faring much better.

The good news:

  • The eastern Dakotas are expected to be productive, offering some relief for potential shortfalls elsewhere.

  • Recent rains in Manitoba have improved conditions.

  • The Great Lakes region on the Canadian side looks promising.

  • California and Alaska are reporting good breeding conditions.

The not-so-good news:

  • Significant portions of the Canadian prairies and parklands are concerningly dry, particularly Saskatchewan and Alberta.

  • Large areas remain affected by drought in parts of the Atlantic and Mississippi Flyways, including central Wisconsin, eastern Michigan, Iowa, and southern Minnesota.

This mixed bag means the overall duck season outlook is uncertain. Stay tuned for further updates as nesting season progresses!
