Waterfowl Migration: September 2023

Waterfowl migration is underway, and it is shaping up to be a good year for hunters and birdwatchers alike. The spring breeding surveys showed average to below average numbers of ducks and geese, but production (young birds hatched) is expected to be good. This is due in part to good wetland habitat conditions in most areas.

The early goose season has been better than last year, and goose numbers are expected to be good for the waterfowl opener. Duck numbers are expected to be fair to good, but scouting will be key as waterfowl numbers in some areas are low right now.

Here is a more detailed look at the waterfowl migration report for each flyway:

Atlantic Flyway

The Atlantic Flyway is seeing good numbers of early teal, with reports of blue-winged teal and green-winged teal moving south. Mallards and wood ducks are also starting to migrate.

Mississippi Flyway

The Mississippi Flyway is seeing good numbers of early teal, with reports of blue-winged teal and green-winged teal moving south. Mallards and wood ducks are also starting to migrate. However, Louisiana is experiencing severe drought conditions, which could impact early teal numbers.

Central Flyway

The Central Flyway is seeing good numbers of early teal, with reports of blue-winged teal and green-winged teal moving south. Mallards, wood ducks, and gadwalls are also starting to migrate.

Pacific Flyway

The Pacific Flyway is seeing good numbers of early teal, with reports of blue-winged teal and green-winged teal moving south. Mallards and wood ducks are also starting to migrate.

Overall, the waterfowl migration report for 2023 is positive. Hunters and birdwatchers can expect to see good numbers of ducks and geese throughout the season. However, it is important to scout ahead of time and be aware of local conditions, as waterfowl numbers can vary from region to region.

Here are some tips for having a successful waterfowl hunting season:

  • Scout ahead of time to find areas where waterfowl are congregating.

  • Be patient and use good camouflage.

  • Use a variety of decoys and calls.

  • Shoot straight!

Waterfowl hunting can be a rewarding experience, and it is a great way to connect with nature. By following these tips, you can increase your chances of success.
